As airports embrace increasing amounts of automation such as biometrics and self-service technology, terminal design will also increasingly find itself supporting the seamless passenger experience. Conventional layouts with static check-in counters and inefficient flows no longer address the demands of modern travel.
With this merger, SITA, the world leader in air transport technology, has acquired CCM, an Italian design company recognized for high-quality airport interiors. The merger is strategic in that it facilitates SITA's blending of technology with intelligent space design for efficiency and passenger comfort.
CCM has long collaborated with top architects to give functional, aesthetically pleasing airport spaces. The merger of CCM's expertise in optimization of space with SITA's leadership in passenger processing and AI-driven airport operations will serve to redefine airport environments.
As the way people travel continues to change, future terminals are to incorporate self-service kiosks and biometric systems in a seamless manner.
David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, stated, “This isn’t just about expanding airports—it’s about reimagining them. By integrating CCM’s design expertise with our technology solutions, we’re transforming airport terminals into smarter, more flexible spaces that optimise passenger flow, maximise existing footprints, and evolve with the industry’s needs.”
He added," Building efficient, tech-enabled environments is crucial for the future of travel. Airports are not just transit points; they are a key part of the journey itself ."
CCM has designed terminals at more than 300 airports worldwide over the past 35 years. The acquisition will enhance SITA's capability to design next-generation airports that blend cutting-edge technology with world-class design.
'Now, airports no longer have to choose between efficiency and passenger experience. Together with SITA, we bring the best of both worlds—smart technology and intelligent design—to reshape airports for the future", said Monica Oberti, Interim CEO of CCM.
"Technology and design must work hand in hand to create smarter, more adaptable airport environments. By joining forces with CCM, we can offer a unique, end-to-end solution—from design conception to operations—ensuring airports are ready for the future of travel", added Sergio Colella, President of Europe at SITA.
